Arcade Fighters In The Age Of DLC

Super Street Fighter 4 Juri 550

Since the beginning of this console generation, broadband internet and the various console stores have been ushering in the Age of DLC. We’ve witnessed many game genres throw their DLC attempts at consumers to see what sticks. In this bold new frontier we’ve seen utter failures and shining beacons that light the way forward. Racing games, RPGs, platformers, FPSs…seemingly all genres have tried; all except the major arcade fighting games.

Next week Rock Band gets some songs from Dinosaur Jr., The Guess Who, Anvil, and Tenacious D.

A little more D never hurt anybody, and it’s great to see their catalog filling out on Rock Band, albeit slowly, but filling out nonetheless.  “Rock Your Socks” and “Tribute” are offerings from Tenacious D’s self titled album.

Also dropping are songs from little known Canadian metal band Anvil, who is currently the subject of a documentary about the band’s trials and tribulations in the music world.

All songs will be available on Xbox 360 and Wii (Sept. 15) and PLAYSTATION 3 system (Sept. 17) — check out the full list:

• Anvil – “666”
• Anvil – “Metal on Metal”
• Anvil – “This is Thirteen”
• Dinosaur Jr. – “Pick Me Up”
• Dinosaur Jr. – “The Wagon”
• The Guess Who – “Hand Me Down World”
• The Guess Who – “No Time”
• Tenacious D – “Rock Your Socks”
• Tenacious D – “Tribute”

(All tracks are original master recordings)

Will he ever go away!?LittleBigPlanet has garnered much attention and praise since coming out nearly a year ago. As such, a Game of the Year Edition was inevitable. In a press release sent out by Sony, the contents of the GotY release of LittleBigPlanet have been detailed.

Today’s re-release will give us 18 new fan-created levels that were hand-picked by the Media Molecule crew. In addition to that, $30 worth of downloadable content will be thrown in for good measure. Here’s a brief summary of what will be included:

Metal Gear Solid Level Pack – featuring the “Paintinator” ($5.99), Metal Gear Solid Costumes ($5.99), Monsters Costumes ($2.99), Monsters Pack ($3.99), History Costumes ($2.99), History Pack ($3.99), and Animals Costumes ($2.99) – all as priced on PlayStation®Store.  In addition, limited quantities of the game will include a PlayStation Network voucher code to download the upcoming ModNation Racers online beta – PlayStation’s newest “Play, Create, and Share” title, a classic kart racing game with a creative twist.  All bonus content is valued at over $30, offering fans an enhanced experience at no added expense.

At $60, it may or may not be a good buy for those of you who haven’t jumped on the bandwagon, yet, but for those who will be picking it up, you’ll be saving money whether you like it or not on some popular DLC.

I’ve pulled Valkyria Chronicles from the shelf under my PS3 to check out the recent DLC. Of the 3 $4.99 downloads, Selvaria’s Mission seemed like the only one with enough content to justify the purchase. I loaded up the missions to find they have no user interface. Unlike the main campaign, or even the other DLC for that matter, Selvaria’s missions aren’t located in the book interface of the main campaign. You start the missions from the title screen and can’t save between the missions.

Sinking my teeth back into VC’s tactical gameplay, I quickly found myself reminded of all the frustrating design oversights that made it into the game….
