At the San Francisco GDC Adam Saltzman, co-developer of the popular iPhone game Canabalt, has announced that Flixel will be ported from Flash to the iPhone.
According to the Destructoid story, Flixel for the iPhone will feature a rudimentary Actionscript 3-to-Objective-C translator to simplify porting. Saltzman’s Flixel news feed on Twitter says Flixel for iPhone will be a “seperate app and library port,” and not an add on to the existing Flixel library. The library is now entering private beta. Anyone can apply by emailing flixel@semisecretsoftware.com.
Saltzman, an Austin resident, has been developing iPhone games to make a living. In his free time, he’s been developing Flixel as a free and open-source Flash library meant for rapid development of games in ActionScript 3.
If you’ve been following any of the game development posts on this site, you’ll know that Flixel has been a go to Game Jam engine in my circle of Austin indie game developers. I know I’ll be keeping an eye on this engine as it develops.
