Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins of Penny Arcade have always been the shining pinnacle of the webcomic world. Their success granted them an army of devout gamers, awaiting their command. From atop this ivory tower, other – lesser – men would, perhaps, build mighty shrines in their own image. But not Krahulik and Holkins. They would harness their community to build a charity that is drawing over $1,000,000 this year.
Their success begs the question: how? How did they get to do exactly what they want to do, day in and day out? It’s a question I hope Penny Arcade: The Series will answer. The pilot episode of this documentary series teases the question before moving on to document this year’s PAX.
“Looking back on it there’s no reason that deciding not to go to college and instead getting an apartment with my best friend and playing video games and making comics – that should not have worked.” – Mike Krahulik
Success by merely doing what you want to do is the epitome of the entrepreneurial spirit. How, Mike and Jerry? How? Was it hard work? Dedication? Luck?
I’m tempted to suggest godly magical powers, but then the documentary cranks down the stardom and brings it down to ground level. Krahulik and Holkins are just two humble guys with kids. How? I’ll be watching – nay analyzing each episode to find Krahulik and Holkin’s secret sorcery.
