DSi XL Set To Supersize America In Early 2010

DSiXL
For any of you that have ever felt like your hardware just wasn’t big enough, Nintendo has you covered. Today they unveiled that the DSi LL, to be released in Japan, and the DSi XL, to be released in America and Europe, would hit store shelves in the first quarter of 2010. As you can see from the picture, the DSi XL is bigger than the DSi. A lot bigger. The new screen measures a whopping 4.4 inches—93 percent bigger than the current DSi screen. No word yet on pricing here in the States, but the new and improved unit will sell for ¥20,000 (US$220) in Japan.

What do you guys think? Appreciate the new screen size, or is Nintendo yanking at our wallets again? Though the new screen sounds great, I for one would rather drop a couple hundred bones on games rather than a newer, bigger version of something I already have. I’m very much comfortable with my current size, thank you very much.

TV Osaka in Japan compared the DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL. The pictures below gives a nice comparison between the three units.

And the video below shows the DSi XL playing New Super Mario Bros. I have to admit, that extra 93% of screen size does make it look awful pretty.

I wonder if there’s been demand for a larger DS. I mean making things bigger isn’t exactly a common trend among hardware manufacturers.

Well it’s kind of frustrating that the DS was originally huge, then they made a smaller one, then they made a smaller one with a camera, then they made a bigger one with a camera. I can’t help but think they could’ve skipped a couple steps somewhere in there. Oh well, I’m sure they’re laughing right to the bank.

I like ‘em big. Might pick it up.
